Earth observation from space e The issue of environmental sustainability

چکیده
Remote sensing scientists work under assumptions that should not be taken for granted and should, therefore, be challenged. These assumptions include the following: 1. Space, especially Low Earth Orbit (LEO), will always be available to governmental and commercial space entities that launch Earth remote sensing missions. 2. Space launches are benign with respect to environmental impacts. 3. Minimization of Type 1 error, which provides increased confidence in the experimental outcome, is the best way to assess the significance of environmental change. 4. Large-area remote sensing investigations, i.e. national, continental, global studies, are best done

Application of rapid impact assessment matrix and sustainability model in environmental impact assessment and operational optimization of solid waste transfer stations in Tehran
Background and Objective: Municipal waste transfer stations (WTS), operate as middle elements in waste collection and transfer to the final disposal site. Besides their benefits in waste transportation cost reduction, WTS can cause negative environmental impacts such as noise, air, and water pollution. Environmental impact assessment is an effective solution to reduce the environmental impacts ...

The remarkable development of sciences and technologies in the world of]o today has apparently brought mankind comfort and well-being, but it has also created new problems for humans including environmental pollution, widespread changes in world weather conditions, etc. Fossil fuels cause numerous environmental pollutions. In other words, on the one hand poisonous gases enter the environment fo...

To overcome these problems in 1978 the Brandtland report announced the sustainable development as not to spend resources more than the nature’s production capacity and not to pollute the nature more than it can assimilate. In other words, the nature should remain in its sustainable state so that the future generations can live with no limitations. The principles of the sustainable dev...
متن کاملRevisiting the status of space-borne lidar missions for assessing structural and biophysical forest parameters in the context of sustainable management of Earth resources
Assessing forest aboveground biomass at global scale is crucial to address the challenge of sustainable management of forest resources and to strengthen forest-based climate change mitigation. To achieve this goal relying on spaceborne lidar missions is acknowledged to be a highly relevant solution. However, if this is taken as a given from the measurement point of view, the premise that spaceb...

Cameroon has a strong geological potential for a number of mineral resources that, if well managed, could support economic growth. The country contains potentially large deposits of iron ore, gold, bauxite, diamond, limestone, nickel, and gemstones, and indices of other numerous minerals and precious metals. Despite its geological wealth, mining has never played a major role in Cameroon’s econo...
